Individual, Couples, and Family Services

Individual, couples, or family mental and chemical counseling is provided to people of all ages. After the initial intake appointment an individual, couple, or family meets weekly or every other week with a licensed mental or chemical health counselor to work on issues that are causing distress in their lives. Together the client(s) and staff member develop a treatment plan and goals. During the course of treatment goals are worked on to help the client(s) develop skills to live healthier and more productive lives.

Group Counseling

Group counseling is designed to help an individual work through issues alongside other individuals. Group members meet once a week for either a time limited group or an ongoing group and are either 90 or 120 minutes in length. Some of the groups offered are:

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): Relate offers a comprehensive Dialectical Behavior Therapy program for adolescents and adults. The Relate program offers individual adult DBT therapy, individual and family DBT therapy to adolescents and their families, two adult DBT groups, and one adolescent multifamily skills training group. Many of Relate's therapists have been intensively trained by the Behavior Technology Group in Seattle, Washington.

Women's Group: A weekly therapeutic process group designed to offer women support, encouragement, and direction in more effectively managing life stressors.

Adolescent Drug and Alcohol Education Group: Provides help for adolescents and parents affected by early alcohol and drug use. Through lecture, videos, and small group discussion with other adolescents and parents, education is offered to help prevent further teen alcohol and drug use. The program is designed for parents who have recently discovered their adolescent has been experimenting with alcohol/drugs or adolescents who have received a legal citation for underage consumption/possession of alcohol or illegal substances. The group is offered for a total of four hours and meets over the course of two afternoons. A parent is required to attend the first 2 hour session with the adolescent. The second session is for the adolescent only.

Chemical Health Early Intervention Group for Teens and Parents: An outpatient program designed for adolescents ages 14-19 and their parents who are experiencing problems from adolescent alcohol/drug use, but not at the level requiring chemical dependency treatment. This intervention is for eight (8) weeks, and groups are for 90 minutes.

At Wit's End: A four session group for which the purpose is to provide information to parents of adolescents about substance use, abuse, and dependency.

Adolescent Property Offenders Group: Designed for adolescents who have had a first time shoplifting or property damage offense. The two-week group meets for two hours each of the weeks. The first week is for adolescent and family members and the second week is for the adolescent alone. The program examines values, urges, and legal consequences.

Youth Skills Counseling

Relate partners with Hennepin County to provide individual, family, and group counseling to youth referred by the Hennepin County Attorney's Office, Operation De Novo, Project Support and the Probation Department. Youth are referred to counseling for issues such as truancy, property offenses, chemical abuse/dependency, and anger issues. Counseling usually lasts between five to ten sessions and family involvement is required.

West Hennepin Mental Health and Chemical Health Assessment Program: A program designed to help youth who have had an encounter with law enforcement, school personnel, parents or other concerned individuals/community agencies involving alcohol or drugs. The goal of the program is to identify and reach out to adolescents and families who may need help with substance abuse and/or mental health concerns.

Psychological Testing

Testing is offered to children, adolescents and adults who are in counseling at Relate. The type of testing needed is determined during an initial assessment. After the tests have been administered the results and recommendations are provided to the client and when appropriate, the client's family.

Psychiatric Medication Assessment and Management

Services are offered to children, adolescents and adults requiring medication in addition to counseling. Services are available to Relate clients only. After the initial assessment clients meet with a psychiatrist on a regular basis to monitor progress.
