The Application Process

Marriage/Family and Psychology Students
Masters level Marriage/Family and Psychology students send their resumes and/or vitas with letters of interest between January 1 and February 28. Interviews will take place in late February or early March, depending on the number of resumes received.

Doctoral level students send their resumes and/or vitas in from December 1 to January 31 with interviews occurring in mid February. Interviews are usually with Relate's Director of Clinical Services and the senior staff member who will supervise the student. Under most circumstances, candidates will be notified of acceptance within one or two weeks of the interview.

Social Work Students
Supervisory staff from Relate will attend the University of Minnesota and Augsburg's “Field Fair” in April, where students can submit Resumes and Vitas with letters of interest. Resumes and Vitas with letters of interest from other schools (e.g. St. Catherine/St. Thomas, Bethel etc.) will be accepted at the same time. Selected candidates will be invited to interview at the end of April or early May. Interviews are usually with Relate's Director of Clinical Services and the senior staff member who will supervise the student. The Universities do the final matching, and candidates and Relate are usually notified at the end of May or early June.

Orientation

Students selected for the programs will initially meet with Relate's Director of Clinical Services, who will give the students a copy of Relate's training manual. The manual includes such items as:
  • Mission and Vision Statements
  • Rule 29 minimum treatment, quality and staffing standards
  • HIPAA of 1996 overview and summary
  • Model of Relate Clinical Chart
  • All clinical forms used in dispatching services
  • Current clinical policies and procedures

Next, the student and Director of Clinical Services set the student's clinical schedule matching his or her needs with Relate's needs. The final step is for the student to set an appointment with Relate's senior staff member who will be their on-site supervisor. This initial training session takes between 2 and 3 hours.

When a student meets with their on-site supervisor for the first time, they will review the schedule that was set with the Director of Clinical Services, setting up times for clinical supervision with reminders regarding the consult teams and Student Supervision Group. They will also set up the student's involvement with upcoming clinical intakes, making plans to sit in on clinical intakes and introducing the student to the intake worker who will collaborate with the them to assign future cases.
